CAMPBELL’S CREAM OF MUSHROOM SOUP — NOT WHAT IT USED TO BE
Information updated November 2025
RAPID REVIEW
Once upon a time, Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup was considered a “Luxury Soup” . . .
THEN vs. NOW: Shown below, Campbell’s Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup has changed over the years. Whereas Water was once the last ingredient, today Water is the first ingredient; Cream was once the second ingredient and now it is the seventh. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) was included both then and now. (Sources: Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Historical Label; Campbell's Web site 11/25)
Following is a comparison of four varieties of Campbell’s Condensed Mushroom Soups >> they all contain Water as the first ingredient plus they all have Soybean Oil as an option with Natural Flavoring, Yeast Extract and Soy Protein Concentrate which are all Not In Kitchen commercial ingredients. Ironically, the “Heart Healthy” version — below far right — is the only one with added Sugar. As we’ve seen, the Original contains Monosodium Glutamate. Yeast Extract is another Flavor Enhancer which is kin to MSG >> they both contain potentially harmful glutamates so the FDA does not allow products with Yeast Extract to claim ‘No MSG’ on the package.
