Alliance for a Healthier Generation was founded by the American Heart Association and the Clinton Foundation. The admirable goals are to empower kids to develop lifelong healthy habits, including healthy eating.
Let’s take a close look at PepsiCo-owned Frito-Lay Munchies Snack Mix Munch Mix which is an approved item for U.S. Schools. (Source: PepsiCo K-12 Web site 8/26)
PEPSICO APPLIES FOR APPROVAL: Seen below, PepsiCo filled out the required form to substantiate that Munchies Snack Mix meets the “Whole Grain-Rich Criteria”.
Following is the “Smart Snacks Product Calculator” document which approves Munchies Snack Mix. With Whole Wheat Flour as the first ingredient in this PepsiCo snack, the approval states, “Your whole grain product meets all nutrient standards for entrées or snack foods”.
THE INGREDIENTS: This Munchies Snack Mix “meets all nutrient standards for snack foods” . . . even though it contains five sources of added Sugars — including Corn Syrup — and has natural flavors, FDA-recognized chemical preservatives, commercial flavor enhancers and additional ingredients we would never use at home to make snack mix such as Whey Protein Concentrate, added coloring and fortification.
Q: How is this happening?
A: Because no one is looking at how the well-intended — but obviously incomplete — guidelines for K-12 Snacks have manifested themselves in actual products being eaten by U.S. school kids.
