Stevia is a naturally super sweet leaf which — when dried to a powder — is a calorie-free way to add some sweetness to foods and beverages. Stevia is available commercially as a Powder or a Liquid.
Stevia Leaves
You would think that when you’re buying Stevia as a Sweetener, the single ingredient would be derived just from Stevia Leaves . . . unfortunately, this is not the case.
POWDERS: Some Stevia Powders contain additional ingredients which do not need to be there including the following:
Erythritol is a sugar alcohol synthesized most commonly from Corn; Erythritol was recently linked to multiple cardiac issues. (Source: The New York Times 3/23) Dextrose is a sugar from which candies like Smarties are made. Silica is a component of sand. Inulin is a type of fiber found in plants. Natural Flavors are commercial flavoring agents.
LIQUIDS: Some Stevia Liquids contain additional ingredients such as Chemical Preservatives, Flavoring and possibly Alcohol.
