WHICH RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE CREAMS ARE CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE?
RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP ICE CREAMS - CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE™
A reader requested a look at which Raspberry Chocolate Chip ice creams are Closest To Homemade™ >> with a specific hope that Graeter’s brand Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream will meet the criteria.
GRAETER’S BLACK RASPBERRY CHOCOLATE CHIP: On the brand’s Web site 5/27/19 it states, “ . . . no other ice cream is made this way . . .” The Graeter’s product contains numerous ingredients Not In Kitchen™ >> NIK™ ingredients are the ingredients which would not be in our kitchens if we were at home making this item from scratch.
For example , Graeter’s Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip Ice Cream contains Expeller-pressed Non-GMO Soy Oil.
Q: Would you use Soy Oil in a homemade ice cream?
Also Not In Kitchen™ in this Graeter’s ice cream are added flavoring, modified corn starch, milk fat, three thickening/emulsifying agents (carob bean gum, guar gum, soy lecithin) and the chemical preservative Citric Acid. (Source for ingredients: Graeter’s Web site 5/27/19)
Let’s look at what’s in three of Unilever’s ice cream brands: Breyer’s, Magnum and Talenti.
All of these ice creams have a few ingredients Not In Kitchen™.
BREYER’S: Breyer’s Black Raspberry Chocolate ice cream is made with “chocolatey” chips >> “chocolatey” means they are not real chocolate, otherwise it would say “chocolate”. The product also contains corn syrup, water and three gums plus pectin >> these are all items Not In Kitchen™ when making homemade ice cream. (Source for ingredients: Breyer’s Web site 5/27/19)
MAGNUM: Magnum’s Dark Chocolate Raspberry contains corn syrup, the chemical preservative citric acid, and three thickening/emulsifying agents: guar gum, carrageenan and locust bean gum. (Source for ingredients: Magnum Web site 5/27/19)
TALENTI: Talenti’s Gelato Black Raspberry Chocolate contains dextrose, soybean oil, carob gum and added flavoring. (Source for ingredients: Talenti Web site 5/27/19)
CHOCOLATE CHIP COMPARISON: Here’s a comparison of the ingredients in the chocolate chips of Graeter’s Black Raspberry Chocolate Chip and Straus Organic Raspberry Chocolate Chip (Source for ingredients: Graeter’s Web site 5/27/19, Straus Web site 5/27/19)
Graeter’s chocolate chips are made with expeller-pressed non-GMO soybean oil and added natural flavors. According to the Environmental Working Group 6/19, “Added flavoring, both natural and artificial, can contain anywhere from 50-100 ingredients.”
SOME GRAETER’S ICE CREAMS ARE BANNED AT WHOLE FOODS MARKET BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN INGREDIENTS WHICH WHOLE FOODS CITES AS “UNACCEPTABLE IN FOOD”: Graeter’s Cookies & Cream Ice Cream contains High Fructose Corn Syrup and Artificial Flavor Vanillin with an ‘n’ at the end >> these ingredients are banned at Whole Foods. (Source for Graeter’s ingredients: Graeter’s Web site 5/27/19; source for banned ingredients: Whole Foods 6/19) The product also contains other added flavoring, guar gum, carob bean gum, and high oleic canola oil and/or palm oil and/or canola oil (which ever is cheapest at the time of production).
The Graeter’s Web site says, “Graeter’s handcrafted ice cream is made the same way Louis and Regina Graeter made it in 1870.” But there was no High Fructose Corn Syrup or any of these other Not In Kitchen™ ingredients in 1870. This statement is misleading. 1870 is almost 150 years ago >> nothing (especially mass-produced) is made the same way now as it was then except maybe certain hand-crafted artisan items.
Note: Legal substantiation is not required for claims manufacturers make online >> there is no one overseeing claims made on corporate Web sites such as this.
MOVING FARTHER FROM HOMEMADE: Graeter’s would have been unable to create a product in 1870 which would be banned by today’s standards at Whole Foods. In 1870, Graeter’s was no doubt Closest To Homemade™ and now it is Far From Homemade™. When did these changes happen? When they created a product to ship which required it to have different characteristics? Enter Food Science.
Here are a couple of other SKUs from Graeter’s which are banned at Whole Foods Market because they include ingredients like multiple artificial flavors and multiple artificial colors. They also contain NIK™ items like corn syrup solids, soy protein and thickening/emulsifying agents and oils.
CLOSEST TO HOMEMADE™: There are (at least) two commercial brands of raspberry chocolate chip ice cream which are Closest To Homemade™: Turkey Hill All Natural Raspberry Chocolate Chip and Non-GMO Project Verified Straus Family Organic Raspberry Chocolate Chip. These products contain no artificial flavors or colors, no corn syrups, no gums, no soybean oil and are made with Real Chocolate.
