WHAT'S IN WELCH'S FRUIT'N YOGURT BLUEBERRY FLAVORED SNACKS?
INFORMATION UPDATED MARCH 2019
Welch’s Fruit’n Yogurt Snacks Blueberry Natural & Artificial Flavors.
The very form of this snack is Far From Homemade™ >> we would not make something like this at home.
WELCH’S SUGGESTS THIS SNACK IS MADE WITH WHOLE FRESH BLUEBERRIES. On the package front, the blueberry-flavored snacks are pictured as whole fresh blueberries falling into white liquid. (Source: Welch’s Web site 3/9/19)
On the package front, the Welch’s snacks are described as, “made with Real Fruit Surrounded by Creamy Yogurt.”
Q: Do the Welch’s package visual and product description make you think the center is 100% made from 100% fruit?
Q: Why is the “made with” in tiny type on the Welch’s package?
THE “MADE WITH REAL FRUIT” CENTER CONTAINS 14 INGREDIENTS: The Welch’s center contains three fruit purées combined with sugar, corn syrup, modified corn starch, pectin, tri-calcium phosphate, citric acid, sodium citrate, two kinds of blueberry flavoring and two artificial colors. There are 18 ingredients Not In Kitchen™ in these Welch’s Fruit’n Yogurt Snacks >> these are commercial items which are not in our home kitchens like modifiers, preservatives, artificial colors, fortification, artificial flavor + emulsifiers. Ingredients such as Modified Corn Starch, Titanium Dioxide, Palm Kernel Oil, Soy Lecithin and Carnauba Wax.
WELCH’S FRUIT’N YOGURT SNACKS’ BLUEBERRY NATURAL & ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS ARE BANNED AT WHOLE FOODS MARKET. The snacks contain artificial blueberry flavor and two artificial colors. These ingredients are deemed as “unacceptable in food” by Whole Foods. (Source: Whole Foods Web site 3/19)
Blueberries are not the primary fruit in these Welch’s snacks >> in the fruit center, there is more white grape purée and pear purée than blueberry. Also in the fruit center to suggest real blueberry fruit are two blueberry flavorings and two artificial colors.
SUGARS ARE THE PRIMARY INGREDIENT IN THESE WELCH’S SNACKS. There are six sources of sugar in these Blueberry-flavored snacks >> three are naturally occurring in the fruit and there is also added sugar and corn syrup in the fruit center plus sugar in the coating. One serving (30 grams) has 18 grams of sugar.
SUGAR IS THE FIRST INGREDIENT IN THE WELCH’S COATING. Ingredients are always listed in descending order of amount, so sugar is the #1 ingredient in the Welch’s coating. Palm Kernel Oil is the second ingredient << would you ever expect to find Palm Kernel Oil in yogurt?
WHEY: The Welch’s snacks contain Whey Powder and Cultured Whey >> Whey is the watery part of milk left after the formation of curds.
CARNAUBA WAX: Carnauba Wax is the type of wax we put on the outside of cars to protect them. In these Welch’s snacks, the Carnauba Wax makes the outside shiny and helps the coating adhere to the sugared-corn syruped-colored-and-flavored fruit center.
CONFECTIONER’S GLAZE (LAC-RESIN) IS MADE WITH RESIN FROM BUGS. Enough said. If you want to read more about this Far From Homemade™ Welch’s Fruit Snack ingredient, click here to Wikipedia:
